Princess Eleonor will take the oath to the Spanish Constitution on October 31 in front of the General Courts, gathered in a solemn session at the Congress of Deputies, as sources from Zarzuela have confirmed. The setting of the date was decided after a meeting that took place on Thursday in a Congress room, at the initiative of the president, Francina Armengol, with the presence of the president of the Senate, Pedro Rollán; the acting Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, representing the Spanish Government, and Jaime Alfonsín, head of the King’s House.
The historic event will also bring together the entire royal family, including King Juan Carlos, and the entire King’s family, which includes, among others, the young children Elena and Cristina. Although they will not be present at the institutional events, they will go to a private and family dinner that the Kings will convene on the same day at El Pardo Palace.
The solemn ceremony will be held on the day the Princess of Asturias will come of age, as her father, Felipe de Borbó, did on January 30, 1986, the day he turned 18. Thus, the heir to the Spanish throne will comply with article 61 of the Magna Carta, which states that “the crown prince, upon reaching the age of majority, and the regent or regents upon taking charge of their functions, they will take the oath before the General Courts to keep and have the Constitution and laws kept and to respect the rights of citizens and autonomous communities, and that of loyalty to the King”.
After the event at the Congress, it is planned that Princess Eleonor will receive the Collar of the Order of Charles III, the highest civil distinction of the State, in an event that will take place at the Royal Palace in the presence of the powers of the State . A lunch will then be held with representatives of the highest authorities of the State. It remains to be seen if on October 31 any candidate will have passed the investiture session and a new Government will be formed or if, on the contrary, the current Executive will continue in office.
After the institutional events at the Congress and the Royal Palace, a family and private celebration will take place at El Pardo, which will be attended by the royal family and the families of the King and Queen. This dinner will be attended by King Joan Carles, who will travel again to Sanxenxo (Pontevedra) on Monday 25 September to take part in a nautical test. The presence of the King Emeritus in Galicia will coincide with the King’s attendance at the Atlantic Forum that will be held on the island of La Toja, located less than 15 kilometers from Sanxenxo.
The heir to the throne faces a very intense October. On the 7th he will swear the flag at the General Academy of Zaragoza, where he is currently receiving military training; five days later he will take part, in Madrid, in the celebrations of October 12, and between the 19th and the 21st he will attend in Oviedo the events that will take place on the occasion of the presentation of the Princess of Asturias awards.
