Already over two hours after the leading rider in the overall standings and with little prospect of making a difference in the course selected the south african Willie Smit after 14. stage in this year’s Vuelta a España to continue in the race, even if he in a crash shortly before the goal læderede his knee so violently, that we had 16 stitches to patch it together.

the Reason he insisted on continuing in the race, was not blatant, but the Sunday before the last stage of the course explained Smit on Twitter, why he is not the type who gives up. The explanation is not exhaustive – in fact, far from – but it is nevertheless gripping.
1/3 : It’s was the Morning after stage 14 after a huge crash the previous day during the flamerough. Long story short I rolled onto the start the next day with 16 stitches in the left knee. Smit has, as a result of a number of violent experiences in life taught, that one should never give up, and to not be intimidated and sticking his tail between his legs.
– When I was seven years old, I saw for the first time a man bitch and my mother. As miserable as our lives were, so that is the one thing that will stand etched in my memory forever, writes Willie Smit on Twitter.
2/3 : When I was 7 years old it was the first time I saw a man beat up my mom. As shit as our lives were there is one thing that will stay engraved in me forever. She was beaten many times, but not once screamed, she let a tear fall, or ran like a coward. It is my motivation, writes Smit, which does not explain who practiced violence against his mother or why.
It is reasonable to assume that it was not his father, and in the next tweet shelves Smit the father, who was killed in soldatertjeneste.
Not long after my father died in Afghanistan in the process of removing the landmines and protect people on these dangerous roads, writes Smit.
3/3 : Not long after my dad passed away in Afghanistan in addition to lifting landmines and protecting people on those dangerous roads. On our wedding night In the customs my wife I’ll never be able to be the man my father was. But they’ve set an example for me not to be a coward. Thanks YOU Mom/Dad! pic.twitter.com/eDUsJtWedc
