Barcelona City Council will claim 294,800 euros from the four concessionary companies for the cleaning and waste collection service after detecting 269 breaches in the performance of their duties during July and August.

The deputy mayors Laia Bonet and Albert Batlle yesterday presented the balance of the summer deployment of the Endreça Plan, intended to bring order to the public space. In these two months, up to 16,000 inspections have been carried out in various areas to ensure good use and coexistence in Barcelona’s public space. Of these inspections, 3,500 have aimed to increase the vigilance of cleaning companies. In this sense, according to those responsible for the socialist government of the City Council, the number of inspections has tripled compared to what was usual.

The first deputy mayor, Laia Bonet, emphasized that the number of breaches in August was much lower than in July. According to the socialist councillor, this inspection policy will be maintained with the application of a new monitoring contract.

The Deputy Mayor of Security, Albert Batlle, assured, for his part, that the increase in the staff of the Urban Guard has allowed a better control of coexistence in the contested public space of the city. This increase in the presence of the local police on the street has resulted in the imposition of 36% more complaints for alcohol consumption on public roads or 19% more for defecating on the street.

The fight against non-compliance with the rules of the civics ordinance, which the government of Jaume Collboni wants to revise in the coming months, has also led to a doubling of the number of denunciations for graffiti and a 34% increase in those related to street sales compared to the same period last year.

During the months of July and August, the Guàrdia Urbana made a total of 7,542 complaints for alcohol consumption in the street, 931 related to physiological needs on public roads, 55 penalties for graffiti and 153 for throwing waste on the street .
