After a year with the Danish Geranium leading the international culinary scene, the British ranking The World’s 50 Best Restaurants announced last night the new list of the best restaurants in the world for this 2023. It did it at the Palau de les Arts de Valencia, a city that this year hosted the awarding of the most important gastronomy awards, and during the ceremony that was presented by the journalist Olivia Freijo, as many expected, the Peruvian Central (from chefs Virgilio Martínez and his wife, Pía León, in Lima) was proclaimed number 1. In this way, it is the first time that Latin America hosts the best restaurant in the world.
Disfrutar from Barcelona, ??from ex-Bullinians Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch and Mateu Casañas, is now the second best on the planet after climbing a position in the ranking; and the Diverxo restaurant, by chef Dabiz Muñoz, in Madrid, is now third after also climbing a position.
Another piece of good news for Spanish gastronomy has been the rise in the list of Asador Etxebarri, from Bittor Arginzoniz in Axpe (Biscay), which last year was in sixth position and which this year is already in the fourth; and that of Quique Dacosta, in Dénia (Alicante), which has risen 22 positions at once, from 42nd to 20th.
On the other hand, the other great grill that has been part of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants for years, Elkano, by Aitor Arregi, in Getaria (Gipuzkoa), which goes from 16th to 22nd place, and Mugaritz, by Andoni Luis Aduriz, in Errenteria (Gipuzkoa), from the 21st to the 31st.
In the course of the gala, the work of Miguel Ángel Millan, at the head of the liquid proposal of Madrid’s Diverxo, was also awarded, who was distinguished as the best sommelier in the world, an award that has been awarded by the jury since last year and that in its first edition it fell to the means of the brothers of the Celler de Can Roca, Josep Roca.
In addition, although it was already known for a few months, the Mexican chef Elena Reygadas was recognized as the best cook on the planet, the Ecuadorian Pía Salazar as the best pastry chef and Andoni Luis Aduriz, chef of Mugaritz, awarded by his professional career. The award for the most sustainable restaurant went to Fyn, in Cape Town (South Africa), and the award for hospitality went to the Danish Alchemist.
