These days, Barcelona is cutting down half a thousand trees planted on the road network that recently died due to the drought. The photo shows the operation that took place a few days ago in Plaça del Taxi.
Municipal sources detail that these withdrawals are the result of the ordinary inspections that the technicians make of all the specimens in the city. The lack of rain also led to the recent felling of around 500 date palms. This summer, a specimen of this species broke and caused the death of a young woman in the Raval. Many date trees already sacrificed were in good condition, but the City Council preferred to be cautious. These palms do not take droughts well. In fact, it hasn’t been planted in Barcelona for years. The managers of the urban greenery opt for trees that adapt better to this environment. Another tree fell down yesterday, in Bon Pastor. There were no injuries. 157 trees fell this year, a figure similar to that recorded in 2022, when just over 200 fell.
The sources add that the watering of the trees on the city’s road network has recently increased. Usually trees planted in streets and squares are only watered for the first four years. This summer, the City Council began to regularly water around 1,500 plants at different points. The streets, squares and parks of Barcelona have nearly 300,000 trees.
