A fire in a five-storey building on Paseo Ramon Berenguer, in the Cerdanyola neighborhood of Mataró (Maresme), yesterday forced the evacuation of three buildings and caused ten minor injuries due to poisoning. Of these injured, only two had to be transferred to the city hospital.

The fire was detected at a quarter past eight in the morning and 13 crews from the General Fire Department and a few from the Medical Emergency System (EMS) were dispatched to the scene. The fire was completely extinguished at 9:14 a.m. without causing any casualties.

The flames quickly rose through the roof of the building and spread to neighboring buildings, so they also had to be evacuated. Some neighbors told La Vanguardia that before seeing the flames they had heard an explosion. The causes are still being investigated.

Cerdanyola is a densely populated area, so the Mossos and the local police armored the perimeter, cutting off access from Carrer Rosselló and Avinguda Gatassa. The firefighters, despite the virulence of the flames, were able to prevent them from spreading to other properties.
