The Ministry of Defense has confirmed that an A330 plane from the Air and Space Army has landed this Friday at the Niamey International Airport, the capital of Niger, to bring back the Spaniards who still remain in the African country.
About twenty Spanish residents in Niger were evacuated from the African country yesterday, Thursday. The evacuees arrived in Paris in one of the planes chartered by the French authorities last morning. The Spaniards were received in the French capital by the ambassador and the consul and were provided with hotel accommodation, since they arrived at dawn, and throughout yesterday they would fly to national territory.
The number of Spaniards who live in the Sahelian country or were traveling when the military coup took place is around 70, but Foreign Affairs has not reported how many of the total colony have asked to be evacuated.
The new Nigerian authorities have finally allowed an Air Force plane to enter their territory to evacuate the Spaniards trapped in Niger, where it is estimated that fifty nationals remain residing or traveling through the African country.
Spain rejected from the outset “in the strongest terms” the self-proclamation of General Tchiani as president of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland and does not recognize any other legitimacy than that of President Mohamed Bazoum.
The Executive, through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, demanded an immediate return to constitutional order and the normal functioning of the country’s democratic institutions.
The situation in Niger, and especially in the capital, Niamey, is particularly tense since demonstrations took place yesterday on the occasion of Independence Day. Thus, thousands of people walked the streets of the capital chanting slogans in favor of Russia, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Mali and against France and the Economic Community of African States, according to Europa Press.
