Vancouver police ID officer who shot wanted man who tried to hit him with car

Vancouver police have identified the officer who shot a wanted man who tried to hit him with a car Saturday.

Officer Ken Suvada is on leave, which is standard practice after officer-involved shootings. The man he shot remains hospitalized but is expected to survive, Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said in a news release Monday afternoon.

Kapp didn’t know how many times or where the man was shot. She also didn’t have details about why the man was wanted.

Police were helping a state corrections officer arrest the man, who hasn’t been publicly identified, Saturday morning on Main Street. The man tried to hit Suvada with his car, and Suvada fired at him, Kapp said.

The man then drove away, hit a car and building, ran away and was arrested, Kapp said. Two people in the car he hit were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The wanted man’s female passenger was not arrested, Kapp said.

She said Suvada, 45, is a patrol officer who was first hired by the department in 2002. He’s worked in a variety of roles for Vancouver police.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
