Hello good morning!

Strategy must prevail over tactics if we want to solve long-term problems, such as the climate crisis, pensions, the aging population or artificial intelligence. Short-termism, however, is imposed by the imperative of politics and the struggle for power. Barcelona, by designing the metropolitan area of 2050 today, is an example to follow.

Economy. The next retirement of Spaniards born 50 and 60 years ago will weigh down the GDP for two decades. The problem is not only their pensions, but the low productivity of the Spanish economy, the lack of qualified labor and the drop in consumption. For 15 years the Spanish GDP per capita has moved away from the European average.

Strategy. Without major strategic agreements in key areas such as health, education, the environment or taxation, it is very difficult for a country to face the challenges posed by the future with guarantees. Few, however, seem willing today to bear the cost of policies that will benefit future generations.

Policy. The PSOE places Vice President Calviño at the center of the electoral campaign in order to prioritize her management, a narrative with which she intends to defeat the passion that decides so many electoral contests.

Scotland. Nicola Sturgeon, former Prime Minister of Scotland, has been arrested for an alleged corruption offence. The £666,000 she raised for a second independence referendum was used instead to fund the Scottish National Party. Sturgeon testified for several hours at the police station and was released.

Colombia. Without the help of the Amerindian guides, it would have been very difficult to find the four children alive who wandered through the jungle for 40 days and were saved thanks to the tenacity of Lesly, the eldest. Those responsible for the rescue operation, however, resisted for several weeks to collaborate with them.

Corruption. Commissioner Villarejo had a close eight-year relationship with María Dolores de Cospedal, general secretary of the PP between 2008 and 2018. Villarejo provided him with information about his political rivals, as well as Operation Catalunya and the judicial investigation into the party’s black money .

Sexist violence. A woman has been murdered in Cornellà in front of her two-year-old daughter. The man stabbed her and then turned himself in to the neighbors, who had tried to stop him. There are already 22 sexist crimes in Spain so far this year.

Barcelona. The metropolitan area intends that the road and rail network that unites its municipalities be greener, friendlier to pedestrians, and more efficient by 2050. The project includes building a city where today there are only vacant lots along with communication nodes.

Tennis. Novak Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud in the Roland Garros final yesterday to win his 23rd Grand Slam trophy. Today he has one more than Rafael Nadal and is the most successful tennis player in history, although he says that he is not the best.

Music. 50 years ago hip-hop was born in the Bronx of New York, then an explosive neighborhood, full of inequalities. Urban music culture made its way to show black pride and class.
