Taste of the Upper West Side festival set to expand

The Upper West Side’s culinary scene has come a long way since the Taste of the Upper West Side began in 2007.

This year, the famed food festival features more than 85 restaurants, including hotspots Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer and Levain Bakery.

The festival begins with “Summer in the City: Surf & Turf,” on May 19, hosted by the Food Network’s Alex Guarnaschelli and TV food personality Adam Richman.

Guarnaschelli is the chef/owner of Butter, Midtown and downtown.

Newcomers to the event include Maison Pickle, The Fat Monk, Kirsh Bakery and Kitchen and Sugar Factory American Brasserie. Other participants include Momofuku Milk Bar, Shake Shack, The Meatball Shop and Han Dynasty.

The cost is $105 per person or two tickets for $185.

On May 20, the Best of the West event, hosted by TV personality Jesse Palmer, will honor chef April Bloomfield, recipient of two Michelin stars and a James Beard Award for Best Chef, and her partner Ken Friedman, winner of the James Beard Award for Best Restaurateur in the US last year.

“This will be our biggest food event yet,” said Donnie Evans, TUWS chairman.

That the 34-seat Bowery Bay Restaurant and Whiskey Bar, at 19-33 Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria, has just scored some hard-to-get pours: Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15- year-old bourbon at $85 per 2 oz. pour and Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23-year-old at $145 per 2 oz. pour.
