Pilot dead after small plane crashes into condo building

A small plane’s tail is the only part of the aircraft visible after it plowed into the roof of a large condo building in Methuen, Mass., killing the pilot, according to a report.

Firefighters are at the scene on Riverview Boulevard, where they were battling a blaze inside the building across the Merrimack River from the Lawrence Municipal Airport to the east, Fox 25 reported.

The pilot was the only fatality and no injuries were reported in the building after firefighters searched units.

A witness told the station that the plane nose-dived silently about 1:30 p.m. into the building, the Prides Crossing Condominiums at 1 Riverview Blvd.

Massachusetts state police said no information was being released yet about the accident.

“We are very sympathetic to the needs of the residents and we were fortunate that there was no further loss of life,” property manager Lou Gargiulo told Fox 25. “It’s certainly a tragic event.”

The FAA and the NTSB are investigating.
