The successor to Switch is an open secret. We still don’t know if it will be called Switch 2 or if it will have another official name, but it is increasingly clear that Nintendo’s new console is a reality. In fact, the Japanese company has confirmed through the social network X (formerly Twitter) that it will officially announce the successor to Switch sometime before March 2025.
The president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, has explained in X that his new console will be announced before the end of the current fiscal year, which began last April and ends in March 2025. In addition, Furukawa has also confirmed that there will be a Nintendo Direct in June focused on video games coming to Switch during the second half of 2024.
X’s post says the following: “This is Furukawa, president of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been more than nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch in March 2015. This June we will be holding a Nintendo Direct on Nintendo Switch games for the second half of 2024, but please note that there is no mention of the Nintendo successor Switch during that presentation.”
At the moment, all the information about the new Switch is rumors and leaks. In the specialized media Vandal, they assured at the end of April that the Switch 2 would be larger than the original console. Specifically, it would go from 7 to 8 inches. And that the screen resolution would be 1080p native.
In addition, the hardware of the Switch successor would also be developed by Nvidia (as in the original console). There is talk of a chip that would use Nvidia’s Ampere architecture, the same as the RTX 30 series of graphics cards. This would allow the Switch successor to use DLSS intelligent upscaling technology, something that would substantially improve the console’s capabilities in terms of to move games with high technical requirements.
But, for now, we have to wait. It is likely that the announcement of the Switch successor will come sometime between June and early fall of this year and that the official launch of the console will be in early 2025, as happened with the original Switch in 2017.
