Why in Spain we prefer to be civil servants rather than entrepreneurs? The question that many experts and trainers have been asking themselves for years continues to be answered by a very extensive mix of socioeconomic, cultural and educational factors that seems endless: in our country the rate of entrepreneurial activity (TEA) is 5.2 %, according to data from the GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor).
Faced with these reduced numbers, the option of being a civil servant in the public administration continues to rule in Spain, with 44% of young people between 18 and 24 years of age having this as their first job option, and increasing this preference for employment to 68%. age range of adults between 45 and 55 years.
The difference is clear, but the hope for those who want to create their own business and undertake remains intact. The Spanish Confederation of Associations of Young Entrepreneurs (CEAJE) highlights that a third of Spanish young people want to start a business, and according to the GEM Spain report, 7% of the active population of our country (between 18 and 64 years) intends to open a business.
Although everything seems to go against a project to create your own business, the CEO of Nuclio Venture Builder, Ernest Sánchez, explains that right now is when you have to take advantage: “Without a doubt it is a good time to undertake. On an economic level, there is a lot of capital to invest despite the pandemic and the war. The economy is growing and it is time to reactivate. It is not a bad moment at all â€, he assures.
The Government has also announced projects to promote entrepreneurship, as demonstrated by the Spain Entrepreneurial Nation Strategy, which the executive inaugurated two years ago and which seeks to be “a key piece for the economic and social transformation of our country” with ” measures to transform the productive bases†of the state and thus multiply the projects of entrepreneurs.
The bases of this project are investment to close the gap with neighboring countries, investing in talent with the aim of attracting, retaining and developing it, increasing scalability and promoting public sector aid for entrepreneurs, another fundamental factor for that many bet on creating their own business.
In order for Spain to consider being an entrepreneur something feasible and a real option for the future, all these ideas must also be integrated into the educational system, a pending issue for a long time: “Entrepreneurship and innovation must be close to the classroom and training centers to facilitate the development of the talent and vocations of the studentsâ€, pointed out in this sense the Minister of Education, Pilar AlegrÃa.
The data in this sense is not at all favorable, since Spain is one of the last countries in Europe in the rankings of entrepreneurial education in school, despite the fact that the level of university education is very high. The figure of the entrepreneur, in short, is far from being an attractive project for the youngest.
Given these great opportunities to start a business in Spain and the lack of entrepreneurial education, resorting to training arises as a very interesting option in order to have everything necessary to start a business with all the bases so that it can succeed and maintain itself.
