From Rubiales to the classrooms: the importance of sexual education to avoid abuse

“As a society we must not allow abuse of power in a work relationship, as well as lack of respect.” This was the applauded declaration of Aitana Bonmatí, recent world champion with the Spanish team, when collecting the UEFA player of the year award.

Behind his words there is a whole social, personal and educational burden that shows how important the non-consensual kiss of Luis Rubiales, president of the RFEF, to a player like Jenni Hermoso, was, which has unleashed an unprecedented wave of rejection of an abusive attitude that has also opened debates.

Despite what is evident to many that this is abuse or sexual assault, there are still points of view that see nothing wrong in what Rubiales did or justify it, the root of that thinking being education or lack thereof. that still exists in schools and institutes.

This type of behavior is terribly harmful for the youngest ages: “Young people see what is done and believe that it can be repeated,” Nuria García, nurse and psychologist, doctor and professor at USC, who also explained on Cadena Ser, alerts to increasingly rapid access to pornography and the willingness to repeat its practices.

The need for quality sexual and emotional education for the little ones has been a pending issue in Spain for years and has often come up against political and ideological barriers that continue to leave it out of play.

For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends starting sexual education programs from an early age in order to preserve people’s sexual and reproductive rights, considered an intrinsic part of human rights.

Furthermore, the WHO recalls that “sex education can help adolescents expand their level of knowledge and understanding, foster positive values,” especially “respect for gender equality, diversity and human rights.”

The importance of sexual education is “the key to real change” to achieve “societies that are truly free and egalitarian, that are not sexist,” says Silvia Aldavert, coordinator of the Association for Sexual and Reproductive Rights.

“We are working beyond the prevention of pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases. It is much broader: how we relate, affective and emotional work,” recalls the expert, making it clear that without widespread sexual education, patterns will continue to be repeated.

The significance of these events and the need for quality training to eradicate this type of abuse can be transferred to all types of areas, since it is an issue that affects society as a whole, from sports to politics and that It is born in education.
