Compass Group Spain and La Unión have signed a collaboration agreement by which more than 1 million kilos of “I’mperfect” fresh fruits and vegetables will reach nearly 900 canteens of companies, hospitals, residences and schools next year. “I’mperfect” fruits and vegetables have excellent quality and organoleptic characteristics, but sometimes they do not reach the final consumer because they have some type of aesthetic deficiency.

In this way, Compass Group Spain includes in its kitchens these products mistakenly called ‘imperfect’, due to their appearance, but which retain their nutritional properties and flavor intact. This new category of products is part of the “Deliciously imperfect@s” project through which the restaurant company aims to value 100% of the products grown on our land.

On behalf of La Unión, its CEO Jesús Barranco, describes this agreement as “the most significant in Spain to decisively fight against food waste. We have the obligation to be responsible with society, with the countryside and with the farmer. Thanks to this agreement, tens of thousands of people in nearly 900 canteens will be able to enjoy our top quality fruits and vegetables.”

Through this agreement, La Unión will supply Compass Group Spain with “I’mperfect” fruits and vegetables exclusively within the collective catering sector.

This collaboration has been announced on the occasion of Fruit Attraction, the International Fair for the Fruit and Vegetable Sector, one of the main events in the fruit and vegetable sector that brings together professionals from all over the world to share the latest news, technologies and services applied to this market. .

La Unión has gone from being a family business dedicated to the export of vegetables to becoming a benchmark in the world of fruit and vegetable marketing and the leading cucumber marketer in the world. Currently, The Union has more than 400,000 tons of fruit and vegetable products sold in Europe, allocating more than 80% of this production to European markets. The company has 30 operations centers distributed between Almería, Granada, Murcia and Málaga, 1,300 employees and 3 laboratories that perform more than 64,000 analyzes annually. The company celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

Compass Group Spain is the reference company in the collective catering sector, with more than 50 years of history. Its purpose is to work every day to positively influence the lives of others through food. It belongs to the British multinational Compass Group, one of the ten largest private employers in the world.
