The plane that made the Istanbul-Barcelona flight this Sunday, March 5, could not make its journey as usual.
According to the TRT Haber portal, flight TK 1855 returned to the Turkish airport as a precaution after detecting a strong odor coming from the cargo hold.
Sensors alerted the cabin crew, and it was the pilot captain of the plane who decided to return to Istanbul airport as a precaution while flying over Bulgarian airspace.
After landing in the Turkish city, different tests were carried out on the plane’s cargo and they were able to determine that the operation of the sensors was caused by the durian, a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia that gives off a strong odor when ripe. Meanwhile, the passengers left for Barcelona on another plane.
The durian is prohibited in some airports, public transport and hotels in various regions of Asia due to its strong odor. Apparently, the smell is due to the large amounts of sulfur that this fruit contains, and it oxidizes when combined with air.
