Two agents of the National Police have performed the Heimlich maneuver on a man who was choking on a torrezno in a bar-cafeteria in Alicante to prevent him from suffocating.
The events took place last Thursday, January 11, around 11:00 a.m. in an establishment in the northern area of ??Alicante where two painters (father and son) were enjoying lunch in the middle of their morning shift.
Two agents from the Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR) of the Alicante Provincial Citizen Security Brigade, who were also in the cafeteria, were summoned by one of them, who was “very alarmed” and shouting “he’s drowning.” Please,” he asked for help when his father was choking.
The agents were able to verify that the affected man could not breathe and made “clear gestures” that his airways were obstructed and that he was choking, the National Police said in a statement.
The agents gave instructions to Room CIMACC-091 for health services to go to the scene. And, seeing that this person’s life was in danger, they began to perform the Heimlich maneuver, a first aid procedure that is performed when a person has their larynx blocked by food or other foreign bodies.
After the agents carried out the rescue maneuver, the victim seemed to regain his breathing, but he immediately indicated to the agents again that his airways were still obstructed, so the second agent continued with the maneuver.
Seconds later, the man expelled a piece of torrezno through his mouth that was blocking his larynx. After being helped, he began to breathe normally and thanked the agents for their help: “You have saved my life.”
Finally, father and son left the premises on their own and the assistance of health services was not necessary. Later, the 57-year-old man delivered a letter of thanks to the two agents and took a photo with them.
