Thinking of joining the gym? Review this must-have list before you start

We all know how important exercise is for our health. But while the theory is clear, some resist the practice. If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to get started in sports, February is a good month to get down to work, once we have left behind the happy slope of January.

Although there are those who prefer to train at home or outdoors, the gym is the best option if it is your first contact with exercise. There you will find different directed classes, equipment and machines, as well as monitors and trainers to ask for help. In addition, the fact of paying a fee helps us to be more disciplined and, once there, seeing ourselves surrounded by other people sweating their shirts motivates us to overcome laziness.

Now, the desire is not enough to give everything in the gym. We need to equip ourselves with a series of essential items with which to perform a good workout. From clothing to what you should include in your bag or backpack, this is what you cannot miss.

When choosing clothes and shoes for the gym, comfort must be your priority. Look for elastic garments that perspire correctly, without too many seams or metal parts that rub against you.

As for the footwear, make sure that it adapts well to your foot and supports it, cushions the footprint and does not squeeze or rub. If you are going to do a high-intensity sport or run on the treadmill, it is interesting to go to a podiatrist to evaluate your footprint, because you may need special insoles.

Whether you are going to shower at the gym or when you get home, it is a good idea to take a towel with you to remove sweat during training, as well as to place it on certain machines and not stain them. You will also need a cosmetic bag with basic toiletries such as make-up remover, deodorant, hair ties, a comb, etc.

If you are going to shower in the sports center, do not forget to take the gel and shampoo, sponge, moisturizing cream, shower flip-flops and a change of clothes.

During training, staying hydrated is essential. If you buy a glass or aluminum bottle and refill it every day, you will reduce the use of plastic, instead of using disposable bottles or cups.

Also, include an appetizer in your bag such as a piece of fruit, nuts or an energy bar. It will give you energy sooner, help you recover afterwards, and can be a big help if you find yourself dizzy during exercise.
