Torrijas, that gastronomic classic inseparable from Holy Week, have captured the interest of the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU). This entity carried out an exhaustive study with the aim of identifying the best options available in supermarkets regarding this delicious dessert.
In the report, the OCU reveals the brands that stand out for their flavor, texture and quality, and indicates which packaged torrijas best meet their preferences and expectations. To determine this, they analyzed several aspects, among which the type of bread used stands out, which is essential.
The texture and thickness of the bread are also crucial to achieve a torrija that is juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. In this sense, it is recommended to opt for quality bread, such as loaf or village bread, that has the ability to adequately absorb milk and eggs.
Likewise, the OCU offers precise recommendations on the ingredients and the preparation process to obtain perfect French toast. Among the key tips is soaking the bread in milk with sugar and cinnamon for at least 30 minutes, as well as frying it in plenty of extra virgin olive oil at an optimal temperature to achieve a perfect golden brown.
During the analysis carried out by the OCU, torrijas from a variety of supermarkets were examined, including Ahorramás, Alcampo, Carrefour, Casa Eceizal, El Corte Inglés and Mercadona. In this meticulous process, criteria such as labeling, nutritional information, the presence of additives, as well as the quality of the fats and sugars used in its preparation were considered.
In the report, the entity concluded that the best torrija is found in Mercadona, being valued positively for its balance between flavors and aromas, as well as for its adequate juiciness. However, it is noted that these torrijas contain high levels of fats and sugars, as well as additives, so it is recommended to consume them in moderation.
Among the alternatives that also received a positive rating are Casa Eceiza’s torrijas, recognized for their exquisite juiciness and pleasant caramel flavor. Likewise, Carrefour’s torrijas stood out for being the most economical and for offering reduced levels of fat and sugar, without sacrificing any quality.
