Penedès winegrowers Antoni Carbó (La Salada winery) and Ramon Jané (Mas Candí) have won the first prize in the Premio Vila Viniteca de Cata por Parejas competition, endowed with 30,000 euros, which this Sunday celebrated its XVI edition in the Casa Llotja de Mar de Barcelona has counted on the participation of 120 teams.
In front of an audience of more than 1,000 people, contest participants had to guess the country of origin, grape varieties, vintage, designation of origin, producer and brand of different wines from around the world, blindly and by consensus. answers.
Ten couples reached the final after passing this phase of the competition and then had to taste seven more wines. From there, the winning couple came out, who received 30,000 euros, while the runners-up took 7,000 and the third 3,000.
In this edition, second place went to Madrid hoteliers David Villalón and Delia Baeza and the pair formed by Valencians Josep Gallego and David Carril, members of the Verema.com winegrowing community, completed the podium.
The competition had a jury made up of Xandra Falcó, commercial director of Pagos de Familia; Fernando Gurucharri, president of the Spanish Union of Tasters; José Peñín, journalist and editor of guides and specialized books; Juan Muñoz, president of the Union of Spanish Sommeliers Associations; and Jordi Segura (Euroselection).
1,300 bottles and 67 wineries have been uncorked, both national – such as the Andalusian Toro Albalá or Valdespino – and international – for example, Niepoort, of Dutch origin.
The audience of the event, coming from different parts of Spain, but also from France, Germany and even Slovenia, has been able to enjoy tastings offered by more than 40 wineries and a tasting of Ardai cheeses.
This award was created in 2007 by Quim Vila and Siscu Martí, owners of Vila Viniteca, one of the leading wine distributors. In the previous edition, the winners were Nacho Martínez and Eloi Cedo, professional from Decántalo, and winemaker from Tivissa (Ribera d’Ebre).
