The average price of cooking a torrija during Holy Week has skyrocketed by 72% in the last three years due to the rise in food prices, especially olive oil, making them “the most expensive in the history”, according to estimates made by EAE Business School.

Specifically, February inflation, whose CPI rose 2.8% year-on-year, has had a special impact on the foods used to make French toast, highlighting olive oil, a regular part of the Mediterranean diet that has become a luxury item with an increase of 67% in the last year.
Likewise, eggs registered a price growth of close to 5% and that of sugar increased by 4.1%, while the price of bread increased by 2%. Among the ingredients in torrijas, only a very slight decrease in the price of milk has been recorded, with a drop of 1.1%.
Although the CPI for electricity and gas have decreased compared to 2023, by 7.7% and 21%, respectively, the decrease in these rates has not been enough to compensate for the increase in prices of these basic foods.
