The iconic wooden plank that Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) cling to in the final scene of the movie ‘Titanic’ was sold at auction for $718,750 (about 663,000 euros), surpassing other objects on sale. selling like Indiana Jones’ whip in The Temple of Doom.
At the auction organized by Heritage Auctions in Dallas (Texas) from March 20 to 24, iconic objects such as Jack Nicholson’s ax in The Shining were sold, but the item that raised the most money was the wooden structure that appears in the award-winning James Cameron film.
Since the premiere of Titanic in 1997, this piece of wood generated controversy, since viewers opened the debate about whether Jack and Rose would have both fit on the panel, since he ends up freezing to death because he could not stay on the platform.
According to The Hollywood Reporter this Monday, the chiffon dress that Winslet wore during the final scene of the film was also sold at auction, in this case for $125,000 (about 115,000 euros).
Local media specified that around 70 props and costume objects could be purchased at the auction and that the initial bid for the piece of balsa wood was $40,000 (about 36,000 euros).
Other objects sold in this auction were the whip that the actor Harrison Ford used in one of the films in which he gave life to Indiana Jones for 525,000 dollars (about 484,000 euros) or the Holy Grail cup used by the same character in Indiana Jones and the last crusade for 87,500 dollars (about 80,700 euros).
There were more than 1,600 objects from film history owned by the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain available in this auction, according to local media, from design sketches and prop swords to the leather jacket of the actor Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2: The Judgment final.
They also specified that a large part of them belonged to film hits from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.
