The Majorcan journalist, writer and activist Antoni Serra, brother of the former founder and president of Grup Serra, Pere A. Serra, died yesterday Saturday, at the age of 87. A great defender of the Catalan language, the loss of Serra has been lamented by the president of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol.
Serra (Sóller, 1936), studied medicine in Barcelona, ??but ended up abandoning those studies to dedicate himself to letters. He was a strong defender of Catalan and one of the founders in 1977 of the Association of Writers in the Catalan Language, an entity in which he served as vice president. Yesterday, its current president, Sebastià Portell was one of the first people to mourn his death.
In 1959, Serra published his first book, Dos Cuentos. And it was in 1971 that he published his first work in Catalan, Gent del Carrer. His extensive curriculum includes having created detective Celso Mosqueiro, one of the most important characters in Catalan crime novels.
In the eighties he delved into genre, erotic, black and horror literature together with María-Antònia Oliver and Jaume Fuster.
In a message on Twitter, President Francina Armengol has remembered Antoni Serra as “one of the great writers of the 20th century”.
Also, added the regional leader, as a “literary and intellectual reference, defender of the Catalan language and activist in the recovery of freedoms in the fight against Franco”.
“My condolences and a hug to the entire Serra family, colleagues and friends”, President Francina Armengol concluded her message on social networks.
