A 14-year-old Utah girl named Elizabeth “Ely” Gonzalez has gone missing in Mexico while visiting her grandmother in Mexico City. She disappeared on June 30, and surveillance footage showed her getting into a taxi. The FBI is seeking the public’s help in locating her, as they believe she was manipulated by an adult into getting into the vehicle.
Gonzalez, a U.S. citizen, had traveled alone to Mexico on June 15 and was supposed to return on August 7. The FBI was notified of her disappearance on July 1. An Amber Alert has been issued in Mexico, and the FBI is working with Mexican authorities on the case.
Gonzalez’s mother, Alma Soreque, last spoke to her daughter on the morning she went missing. They discussed Gonzalez’s morning routine and breakfast plans. Soreque immediately contacted authorities when she found out Gonzalez had not returned.
Soreque described her daughter as smart and compassionate, and she had just completed seventh grade at Roy Junior High School. Gonzalez was visiting family in Mexico City to connect with her culture and roots, as she had visited the city before without any issues.
Former FBI agent Nicole Parker mentioned that Gonzalez might not be able to communicate with her loved ones if she was lured into a car in Mexico. However, children are resourceful, and if Gonzalez can find a way to reach out for help, she will.
The FBI does not have jurisdiction in Mexico, so Mexican law enforcement leads the investigation. However, the FBI’s Legat office and assistant legal attachés (ALAT) in Mexico City are working tirelessly to locate Gonzalez.
Soreque expressed her devastation over her daughter’s disappearance, describing it as a nightmare for any mother. She urged anyone with information to come forward to help bring her daughter home.
