A family’s fun paddleboarding trip in Florida turned into a scary situation when a mother got separated from her loved ones during a thunderstorm off Cedar Key. The U.S. Coast Guard was alerted by the Levy County Sheriff’s Office dispatch about the missing mother at 10:41 a.m.

The father and daughter managed to make it safely to Dog Island, but the mother was still out at sea. Thankfully, the Coast Guard located her around 11 a.m. and brought her back to her family. They were all taken back to the Cedar Key Boat Ramp by boat.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Elizabeth Knight mentioned that they spotted the mother’s bright orange life jacket while scanning the water with binoculars. The quick actions of the Coast Guard led to a successful rescue operation, and the family was reunited without any injuries.

Capt. Michael P. Kahle, commander of Sector St. Petersburg, commended the Coast Guard crew for their dedication to saving mariners in distress. He highlighted the importance of the aids to navigation team in this particular rescue mission and expressed gratitude for their swift response.

It’s reassuring to know that the Coast Guard is always prepared to assist those in need at sea, whether it’s during routine maintenance or emergency situations. Kahle thanked all Coast Guard members nationwide for their hard work and emphasized the importance of reuniting the mother with her family.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of being prepared for unexpected challenges while engaging in water activities. The quick thinking and efficient response from the Coast Guard ensured a happy ending to what could have been a tragic situation for this family.
