The municipal group of the Popular Party in the Mataró City Council (Maresme) proposed again on March 4, a proposal that had already been approved in a plenary session two terms ago and “that never materialized” according to Cristian Escribano, popular spokesperson. , to promote the city’s Holy Week events to become part of the Catalog of Patrimoni Festiu de la Generalitat.
Related to Holy Week in Mataró, since 2012 the Armats parade has been listed as the city’s heritage and in 2013 the same was done with the general Good Friday procession. All of this, in the opinion of the PP, the speaker of the plea before the plenary session, demonstrates the importance of this celebration and the roots it has in the capital of Maresme. In addition, it is a great attraction for religious and popular culture tourism.
The popular spokesperson pointed out that “Mataró’s Holy Week is one of the city’s greatest cultural heritages. Our Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods are unmatched in dedication, work and love for our faith and our tradition”, and that “unfortunately, the City Council has never lived up to the dedication and work of the hundreds of people who make up the Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods, both due to lack of institutional support and due to the limited funding dedicated to them.”
“These entities organize more than 50 events during Holy Week in Mataró, which are followed by thousands of residents of Mataró, Maresme and Catalonia,” says the PP spokesperson. That is why Escribano has asked the Municipal Government to immediately begin, in collaboration with the Holy Week Commission, the work to obtain the distinction of Mataró’s Holy Week as a Catalan festive heritage, and later also that of a Festival of Interest. National Tourist.
Once the religious celebration is classified by the Generalitat, the PP also proposed that it be elevated to a Festival of Tourist Interest at the Spanish level. The Plenary approved the PP Resolution Proposal with the vote in favor of the PSC, ECP, ERC and VOX, the abstention of JuntsxMataró and the vote against the CUP.
The majority of the corporation’s parties supported the proposal with nuances. For the PSC, the Councilor for Culture, Heidi Pérez, praised the “excellent institutional relationship with the Holy Week Commission.” Anna Salicrú, from ERC, recalled that there is no specific classification as a festival of tourist interest in Catalonia, but that it can be included in other cultural heritage. Judith Cortés, from Vox, argued the favorable vote for her formation based on the religious sense rooted in the city. From JxMataró, Alfons Canela, based his abstention on the fact that “the proposal had not been presented in Catalan” and finally, the representative of the CUP, Carlos Garcia, reasoned the negative vote due to the need to “disconnect from religion.” local activity.
