Kabosu, the Japanese dog behind the Doge meme, dies

Kabosu, the Shiba Inu who gave life to the famous Doge meme and who even has his own cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, died this Friday. His owner, Atsuko Sato, announced it on social networks, generating a wave of reactions and tributes from Internet users around the world.

The story of Kabosu and his iconic image began in February 2010, when Sato, a Japanese kindergarten teacher, posted photos of her newly adopted dog on her blog. Among these photos, one in particular captured attention: Kabosu looking askance at the camera with raised eyebrows.

This cute pose sparked a massive internet phenomenon, becoming the ‘Doge’ meme and using Kabosu and other Shiba Inu in countless jokes and outlandish comments.

Sadly, Kabosu has died after almost two years of health problems that made it difficult for him to move. In the last images of him, he was seen using a dog wheelchair, which moved many of his followers. The news of his death marks the end of an era for such an influential figure in Internet culture.

In December 2013, Doge’s image became the basis of a cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, which quickly gained popularity. This cryptocurrency has been widely supported by public figures such as Elon Musk, who contributed to its growth and dissemination.

Dogecoin has been an example of how a simple meme can have a significant impact on the digital and financial world.

A visibly moved Atsuko Sato shared her feelings: “I think he’s still snuggling next to me. I am sure that she will accompany me for a long time.”

In addition, he announced that Kabosu’s funeral will be held on May 26, describing it as “a fun farewell party.”
