The snow season is inaugurated! For many, it is an exciting time full of fun and sports. If you live as a family, it is likely that you will go up to the mountains with your children in the coming weekends, whether to practice skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing, or simply to play in the snow. In any case, clothing is a fundamental aspect of these excursions. The weather becomes more extreme the more meters we climb and the temperature changes that occur throughout the day can complicate the mission of keeping our body dry and warm.

Below, we explain everything that parents should take into account when preparing their children’s clothes to go to the snow. With these tips, there will be no low temperatures that will resist you and you will only have to worry about enjoying yourself!

This is the rule that should govern when dressing children (and adults too) for the snow. The three-layer method basically consists of wearing breathable clothing to allow sweat to escape and avoid hypothermia. Thus, it is recommended to wear a thermal shirt as the layer closest to the skin, preferably if it is made of merino wool or synthetic fabrics such as acrylic, polyester or polypropylene.

The second layer helps us maintain body heat, which can be a thin jacket made of the materials already mentioned. Finally, the outer layer is not only what evacuates interior moisture, but must also protect children from outside humidity and wind. This should be a waterproof jacket, with a zipper that is easy to manipulate and guarantees mobility. Better if it is a color that stands out or even reflective to provide visibility.

As for the legs, choose a thermal inner pant and another specific one for snow to put on top. It is recommended that the cuffs remain inside the boots. Always avoid jeans, which absorb water quickly but dry slowly.

Already in the field of accessories, dress the children with well-insulated, breathable and waterproof winter boots. Try not to make them too tight, to facilitate blood circulation and heat to the entire foot. Socks can be made of natural wool or thermal.

Children’s heads are the first place they lose heat, hence the importance of dressing them with hats and even earmuffs. Also essential is the use of a scarf or panty that covers the neck, ears and the bottom of the head. Also don’t forget good sunglasses to protect children’s eyes from the reflection of the snow.

The function of gloves is to provide good insulation and waterproofing to the hands. Mittens are an option that we can consider in the case of younger children.

It is also recommended to bring a complete change of clothes, not so much as a spare, but for the return trip in case they get stained, sweaty or get too wet.
