The concern of the Spanish to adopt a more sustainable way of life is increasing. Now, in addition to the quality or cost of the product, consumers attach importance to the fact that the articles and food purchased in supermarkets are respectful with the environment. This is reflected in the report “The impact of sustainability in the shopping cart” carried out by Aecoc Shopperview, which indicates that interest in purchasing sustainable products has increased by 18% compared to 2019.

The document concludes that half of consumers have stopped choosing brands that they do not consider sustainable, but price continues to be the first reason for purchase for 58% of Spaniards, a percentage that has been growing during the current period of inflation.

To decipher if a product is sustainable or not, the Spanish look at aspects such as packaging, the environmental impact of the production process, the offer of healthy products or information on the composition.

The Aecoc has indicated that these data demonstrate “the interest of consumers in this axis, since 48% of those surveyed consider themselves very informed in terms of sustainability”.

Despite the relevance that sustainability has gained when making purchases, the report reflects that inflation is also conditioning consumers, and that three out of ten respondents have reduced the purchase of sustainable products due to the price.

In addition, 48% have changed establishments to have a sustainable basket at a lower cost.
