The Pennsylvania gun shop where Thomas Matthew Crooks bought ammunition before attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler County has vowed to support law enforcement during the investigation into the attack. The owner of Allegheny Arms, Bruce Piendl, expressed gratitude that President Trump was not harmed and extended condolences to all the victims of the incident.

Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, was described by classmates as quiet and a target of bullies but also a strong student in math and computers. He purchased 50 rounds of ammunition from Allegheny Arms before the shooting. The gun shop emphasized its commitment to responsible firearm ownership and declined to provide further comments during the ongoing investigation.

Federal investigators are still determining the motive behind Crooks’ actions and have seized his phone, laptop, and the rifle used in the attack for analysis. The FBI also visited the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club, where Crooks was a member, although it is unclear if any evidence was found at the range. Members of the club condemned the violence and extended condolences to the victims.

Crooks used a DPMS AR-15 5.56 rifle legally purchased by his father in 2013. Searches of Crooks’ residence and vehicle have been completed, and the FBI has interviewed numerous witnesses in connection with the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to submit tips to the FBI.

Former Secret Service agent Dave Katz highlighted the importance of paying attention to red flags exhibited by individuals close to the shooter, such as family, friends, and co-workers, rather than strangers encountered at shooting ranges or stores. He cited the example of the Aurora theater gunman, whose erratic behavior at a range prompted the owner to intervene.

The community is reeling from the senseless act of violence and is coming together to support the victims and their families. The investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Trump is ongoing, with law enforcement agencies working diligently to uncover the motivations behind the attack.

In times of tragedy, it is crucial for communities to stand together and support one another. The impact of such incidents reverberates far beyond the immediate victims, affecting the entire community. By working collaboratively with law enforcement and remaining vigilant for warning signs, we can strive to prevent future acts of violence and protect our society.
