Gala has done it again. Jorge Sánchez Cuervo’s dog has won the European Canine Surfing Championship for the second consecutive year, held this weekend on the beach of Salinas de Castrillón (Asturias) in which up to twenty dogs have participated.
Sánchez’s dog has once again shown that it is the best in this discipline. And that balance is not beaten by any of his other furry companions. As a prize, Gala has taken a trophy and a surfboard, in addition to the right to choose the animal protector to which she wants the 1,500 of food donated by Dingonatura, the championship sponsoring company, to go.
In second position has been Kokun; third place has been for Wolfy; and the fourth place has been for Suky, in a contest that has raised the expectation of lovers and curious who walked along this beach.
Almost twenty dogs have climbed on a board, life jacket included, and have tried to surf the waves of the Salinas de Castrillón beach. They went with their owners, who were the ones who pushed the boards and determined which wave to place the dog on.
They received the score according to the weight of the dogs (up to 5 kilos, from 5 to 15 kilos and from 15 kilos) and the number of waves they were able to overcome in ten minutes. They were rated from 1 to 10.
The European Canine Surfing Championship, the first of its kind to be held in Europe, had a charitable objective, because the competition tries to make people aware of the need to adopt dogs from shelters. In addition, information was provided to all the participants and curious about the steps to take and the way of existing adoptions.
The event, which has raised great expectations, had recognized figures in its jury, such as the sports journalist Pipi Estrada, who was part of a jury made up of six people. Among them, three surf sports judges, a representative of the Royal Spanish Canine Society and another person representing the organization of the contest.
