Full nude, songs of pain and beauty: the La Inesperada festival arrives in Barcelona

The La Inesperada film festival, with a program made up of twenty-four unpublished works, 4 feature films and 20 shorts, presents a new edition full of cinematographic works and visual pieces unpublished in Catalonia.

The chosen films bring together cultural currents from around the world (Burkina Faso, Lithuania, China or even virtual worlds). Among the proposals, shorts such as As filhas de fogo, by Portuguese director Pedro Costa, or feature films such as Man in Black, a portrait of the retaliated composer Wang Xilin, stand out, films that have toured the best international festivals in 2023.

With a program organized in three sections – Atòmica, Supernova and Cuadecuc -, international and national works will be interspersed. In addition, there will be the presence of directors such as the Catalan Blanca Camell – a tribute section is dedicated to her – or the American Blake Williams, among others.

The Supernova section will dedicate a retrospective to the work collected in The Riga School of Documentary Poetics, from its initial attempts to break with the norms of socialist realism, with the work of the Latvian director Uldis Brauns, to an unusual approach to the revision of historical traumas thanks to the work of Latvian director Ansis Epners. To complete, the bold experimentations of the Latvian director Herz Frank will be taken into account.

In addition to the honored directors, the Supernova section will feature the presence of Latvian director Laila Pakalnina, who will not only show her work but will also have a conversation with programmer Mariana Hristova.

The Filmoteca de Catalunya and the Zumzeig hall will be in charge of hosting the festival, screening the selection of films in their halls. All of them from the perspective of non-fiction – the seal of La Inesperada -, a free and broad field where a range of audiovisual pieces committed to reality and authenticity are offered.
