A former correctional officer at a federal women’s prison in California has been arrested on charges related to allegations of sexual abuse by five female inmates. Darrell Wayne Smith, who worked at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, was initially accused of sexually abusing three women between 2019 and 2021. However, a superseding indictment now charges him with 15 counts of sexual abuse, including civil rights violations against five victims.
The U.S. Department of Justice expressed outrage at the alleged actions of Officer Darrell Smith, stating that such behavior is unacceptable. The indictment reveals that Smith engaged in separate sexual conduct with each of the victims, with the alleged abuse dating back to as early as 2016.
In response to the charges, U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey emphasized the importance of treating prisoners humanely and putting an end to sexual victimization and civil rights violations within the prison system. Smith currently faces multiple charges, including sexual abuse of a ward, abusive sexual contact, aggravated sexual abuse, and deprivation of rights under color of law.
While Smith’s arraignment for the superseding indictment is pending, his trial is scheduled to begin in March 2025. If convicted, he could face life in prison for each count of aggravated sexual abuse and deprivation of rights under color of law, as well as significant prison time for other charges.
This case is not an isolated incident at the Dublin prison, as Smith is at least the sixth employee to be charged with abusing inmates. A previous investigation highlighted a culture of abuse and cover-up at the facility, leading to increased scrutiny and efforts to address systemic issues. The former warden of the prison was convicted of similar offenses in 2022, underscoring the need for comprehensive reform.
The Justice Department has taken a more proactive approach in prosecuting prison employees accused of misconduct, signaling a commitment to accountability and justice for victims.
