The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) has launched an alert in relation to a cane filled with chocolate whose labeling “does not report the presence of possible traces of milk.” For this reason, the agency dependent on the Ministry of Consumer Affairs asks those allergic to milk not to consume it.

Specifically, it is the product CaƱa filled with cocoa from the Dulcesol brand, which is sold in a plastic container with three units, weighing 141 grams. The affected lots are 04G, 11G, 21G, 01H, 12H, 25H, 31H, with different expiration dates.

Aesan has been made aware of this information through an alert notification sent by the health authorities of the Valencian Community. The manufacturer reported the incident through a statement, after detecting the undeclared allergen in a self-monitoring.

According to the information available, the affected product has been distributed in Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Extremadura, Galicia and Murcia, but it is not ruled out that there may be redistributions to other autonomous communities.

As a precautionary measure, Aesan recommends that people allergic/intolerant to milk who may have the mentioned product in their homes not to consume it. But remember that eating these cocoa-filled canes does not pose any risk to the rest of the population.

Milk allergy is usually caused by casein, lactoglobulin and/or lactalbumin. The most common symptoms affect the skin, but they can also be digestive, such as vomiting and diarrhea. When it comes to lactose intolerance, that is, an inability to digest this component of milk, diarrhea usually occurs.

The Spanish Association of People with Food and Latex Allergy (AEPNAA) states that food allergies can affect any age group, but that it is more common in early childhood. As milk is the first food introduced into an infant’s diet, it is the first allergy to appear, affecting 2% of the population.

“In Spain, the percentage of people allergic to cow’s milk in the first year of life occupies third place in allergic pathologies behind allergies to eggs and fish,” the association reports on its website.
