Firmware Update: Rumor: VRR Support for 5 on the Way

Vincent Teoh shared a video on the HDTVTest YouTube Channel that showed the new Sony TVs, like the A90K will support VRR when they launch. This coincides with the imminent arrival VRR support for PlayStation 5 via firmware upgrades.

Sony confirmed that the PlayStation 5 hardware supports Variable refresh rate through HDMI 2.1 shortly after its release in 2013. However, the feature will not be available until a future firmware upgrade.

Is VRR supported by PS5?

PS5 hardware supports variable refresh rate (VRR), via HDMI 2.1. PS5 owners will soon be able use the VRR feature on compatible TVs after a future software update.

Variable refresh rate is a technology that is already available on the Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series X. It completely eliminates screen tearing, reduces stuttering, and input lag. The Xbox Series X currently has it as one of its advantages over the PlayStation 5. It was strange to see VRR not supported on the PlayStation 5 at launch. However, it is now being announced.

Dates for the PlayStation 5 firmware update, which will introduce Variable Responsive Rate, are yet to be determined. We will keep you informed as soon as new information becomes available. Keep checking back for the most recent news.
