Discover eight Catalan fairs where you can buy local cherries

The cherry season begins in May and there is no better plan than to buy them directly from the farmers, of the highest quality and at a fair price for everyone. In addition to being delicious, this fruit provides multiple benefits to our body: it is rich in antioxidants, strengthens memory and is a muscle anti-inflammatory. In addition, it is very versatile in the kitchen, with both sweet and savory possibilities.

Don’t think twice and enjoy a day full of activities at one of the eight fairs that we present to you in this article, while contributing to local commerce.

This festival begins this afternoon in Santa Coloma de Cervelló with a performance by l’Associació Comissió Mostra de la Cirera, a proclamation and the presentation of the Cirera 2024 Prize. The markets and food exhibitions will open right after and can be visited throughout on the weekend starting at 10 in the morning.

Most activities are related to this fruit and/or its applications in gastronomy. For example, the cherry box stacking contest in the middle of tonight’s concert, the mushroom tasting, the cherry dance or the cooking showcooking with seasonal products by chef Cristina Roig.

Although in this town the cherry farmers markets have already been held in the Plaza de la Vila every Sunday in May, its annual Cireres Exhibition has a program of activities worthy of a Fiesta Mayor. Many of them are related to the star fruit, such as the representation of the Llegenda del cirerer, the Cercavila del Ball de Cireraires, the photography contest and the decoration of a cherry, and the Correfoc de les cireres, among others.

This year, the Festa de la Cirera de Miravet has changed format to become a multi-sector fair where you can buy all types of products that boost the economy and heritage of this Tarragona population.

From 11 in the morning, the Plaza del Arenal de Miravet will have exhibitors of artisanal products and food, with a great role for cherries, but also for oil and wine, with tastings and competitions included. The day will be enlivened with different live music proposals and a concert by the Phil Mahon Band at 7:30 p.m.

This medieval city of Girona hosts a long program of activities this Sunday, including children’s shows, a sardana dance, an exhibition of traditional wooden games and a brotherhood lunch. However, the most important thing is that throughout the day there will be stops with artisanal and food products among which the protagonists cannot be missing: cherries.

This festival has been celebrated in Papiol since 1983, where cherry cultivation has been very important in the local economy for decades and has become integrated into the identity of the town, although its production is increasingly scarce. For this reason, this event is gradually approaching a gastronomic fair, with the promotion of other gastronomic products from km0 and the promotion of restaurants and local commerce, with the aim of getting the involvement of large companies in the municipality ( Currently the collaboration is between small businesses and local entities).

Although at 8:30 a.m. farmers will be able to set up their cherry displays, the official opening will be held by Roger Torrent i Ramió, Minister of Business and Labor of the Generalitat of Catalonia, on Saturday the 1st at 5:30 p.m. At that time, awards will also be presented to the best local cherry producers of this edition.

It should be noted that in this fair the protagonist is the cherry, with the sale of derivatives such as cokes, jams and liqueurs. Likewise, on Sunday the 2nd at 12:30 p.m. chef Albert Guzmán and Celler Cal Minyó will carry out a cooking show where possibly this fruit will also be in the center. The party will be complemented with other plans such as a sheep shearing demonstration, children’s crafts and inflatables, concerts and raffles.

In this municipality, the sale of cherries is combined with street events for the little ones, local craft stalls, sardanas and the traditional cava plate gathering. In addition, Empordà restaurants have joined the party with “Remena’m la cirera”, an offer of dishes dedicated to this fruit that they serve during the months of May and June.

This celebration begins on Saturday the 1st at 8:00 a.m. with a walk of more than two hours through the cherry fields. Next, in the town there are activities such as a balloon cherry workshop, a cherry pit throwing contest, a musical vermouth, children’s workshops, the popular game “The Assassin” adapted to the occasion and concerts until dawn.

Likewise, many establishments in the city will join the celebration during the weekend with the preparation of dishes such as cherry gazpacho, pig’s feet with cherry aioli or cheesecake with candied cherries.
