A video shared on TikTok by user @enfermerojorgeangel has revealed a common kitchen habit that could be dangerous. In the video, the user explains his practice of cutting mold off onions and other products before using them in his recipes, without being aware of the risk this entails.

The user relates his personal experience of finding mold on an onion while preparing macaroni, explaining that he used to eliminate the affected part and use the rest of the vegetable. However, after further investigation, he discovered that moldy foods can contain invisible microtoxins that pose a health risk, even if the visible part of the mold has been removed.

The video has generated a variety of opinions among users, some of whom defend the practice of cutting out the mold and using the rest of the food, based on uneventful family experiences.

However, others have expressed concern about the potential health risks associated with eating foods contaminated with microtoxins, and have urged a more cautious approach.

Specifically, some of the most notable comments are the following: “There’s something like throwing away the whole onion… you take the bad and the good out of the pot, nothing has ever happened to us in my house,” “which is toxic.” It is the price at which they have put everything” or “my grandparents died at the age of 97 and spent their entire lives removing mold from all the fruits and vegetables.”
