Austin Water chief resigns following a 4-day boil water notice due to human error

After a four-day boil water notice that was incorrectly issued in the Texas capital, Greg Meszaros, head of Austin Utility, has been forced to resign.

Human error was the reason for the boil water notice. According to Fox7, Meszaros resigned in a memo he sent to Spencer Cronk as city manager.

“I accept full responsibility for any failures at the utility this week. Meszaros stated that he also takes pride in the many achievements of our team. “While I love my job as director and am proud of the accomplishments my team has made over the past 15 years that I have been Austin Water’s leader for, I am ready and able to step down.”

Fox 7’s Meszaros stated that it was becoming obvious that the error was made by our Ullrich Plant operating staff. He also spoke out about how they handled the Ullrich water treatment process. “This is absolutely unacceptable to us.”

This error caused the Ullricch Water Treatment Plant to cease operations. Meszaros claims that this has never happened before. The city took the necessary steps to lift the notice after the incident. They tested water samples to make sure that the water was safe.

Mackenzie Kelly, Austin councilmember, stated that staff issues are the “responsibility of the director.”

Kelly explained to Fox 7 that she requested after-action reviews of the five most recent incidents at Austin Water utility. “I will be reviewing them this weekend and I’ll present my findings to the special-called Meeting.”

In 2007, Meszaros was appointed director.
