Alex Morgan, the star player of San Diego Wave FC, was honored by Mayor Todd Gloria by receiving the Key to the City in a special ceremony. The mayor, along with City Council members, recognized Morgan for her exceptional contributions to soccer and her advocacy for gender equality in athletics.
Morgan, a two-time World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist, recently retired after her final match with the San Diego Wave FC. She has an impressive record of 224 caps and 123 goals for the U.S. Women’s National Team, making her the fifth all-time leading scorer in the team’s history. Beyond her athletic achievements, Morgan has been a strong voice for gender equity in sports, particularly in the fight for equal pay for female athletes.
Mayor Gloria praised Morgan for not only her success on the field but also for her dedication to breaking barriers and inspiring future generations. He highlighted her role in encouraging young girls to pursue their dreams of becoming professional athletes and emphasized the importance of challenging societal norms and limitations.
Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava commended Morgan for her extraordinary soccer career and her ability to inspire players and fans around the world. He acknowledged her relentless efforts to promote pay equity in women’s sports, which has had a significant impact on the game and shifted perspectives for the better.
In addition to receiving the Key to the City, the San Diego City Council declared September 8, 2024, as “Alex Morgan Day” in honor of her final professional match with Wave FC. Councilmember Marni von Wilpert described Morgan as more than just an athlete, emphasizing her role as a role model and trailblazer for young women and girls both locally and globally.
Councilmember Raul Campillo highlighted Morgan’s lasting contributions, noting that she will inspire an entire generation of young women to pursue their dreams and redefine what is possible for themselves. He praised her for embodying the spirit of resilience and determination in the face of challenges.
Apart from her achievements on the field, Morgan has also made a significant impact through her newly established Alex Morgan Foundation. The foundation aims to promote equity and opportunity for girls and women in sports and in life, further solidifying Morgan’s commitment to empowering the next generation of female athletes.
