Few wineries have a history as extensive and rooted in their land as Abadal. In fact, the first documents of its existence date from the year 1199, in which Masía Roqueta (or Mas Roqueta), located in Santa Maria d’Horta d’Avinyó, is shown to be continuously cultivating its vineyards.

But it was not until 1983 when Valentí Roqueta would found the Abadal winery, establishing it around the aforementioned Roqueta farmhouse, a place where he had seen him grow and where his family has produced wines for more than 8 centuries.

Roqueta was precisely one of the main promoters of the Pla de Bages Denomination of Origin, formed in 1995 and chaired by himself for 20 years (until 2015).

A few years ago, Abadal inaugurated new facilities to receive wine lovers, consisting mainly of an interesting wine museum (with barrels and instruments over 300 years old), an exhibition room (transport and vehicles that have played a leading role in winemaking since the Middle Ages) and a new air-conditioned tasting room: a project with which the winery intends to publicize a region far from the most common wine tourism circuits but, even so, of great interest and beauty natural.

Vineyards in a very particular setting

Holm oaks, oaks and pines that coexist harmoniously with the Abadal vines, which express themselves vividly in our wines, providing unique nuances.

Likewise, its vineyards are distributed in terraces at different levels. They are nourished by a soil of clay and calcareous stone that, with the proximity of the forest and the contribution that it makes to their wines, gives expressiveness and complexity. The vineyards are immersed in a unique Mediterranean-type microclimate with continental influence, with a marked thermal oscillation between day and night.

Abadal 5 Merlot: body, soul and persistence

One of its most distinctive wines is the Abadal 5 Merlot. A proposal that presents the complexity of five types of Merlot that grow on five different plots to produce a single wine, providing the particular characteristics of each of these vineyards.

On the nose, balsamic, spices and cocoa. On the palate, currants and cherries predominate, blended into a sublime complexity of the terrain. 12 months in the barrel round off the wine. Ideal to enjoy with lamb ribs, a veal fricandó or a sacher tarte.

Now you can enjoy the Abadal 5 Merlot wine thanks to the 10th Anniversary Selection of the Club de Vinos de Gourmet La Vanguardia, where it is accompanied by six great wines that have been part of the selections in these 10 years: LaQuarta de Sant Josep Vins de Terra Alta, Tocat de l’Ala de Coca and Fitó del Empordà, Loidana de Marco Abella del Priorat, Braó de Acústic Celler del Montsant and Durona de Montrubí del Penedès.
