After several weeks in which the future of David Broncano’s program was in the hands of the RTVE Board of Directors, a final decision has already been made. The presenter will take his space La Resistencia to La 1 to fight directly against El Hormiguero by Pablo Motos.

With this, the corporation intends to improve the audience data it is collecting and, incidentally, try to find a formula to snatch Antena 3’s throne of prime time television access in Spain. A controversial signing that almost didn’t happen, but this Wednesday it was sealed.

The Council held an extraordinary meeting in which the acting president’s casting vote made RTVE buy the format. A contract for two seasons, and the second may be canceled if the 7.5% audience share is not reached during the first.

For this reason, the corporation is going to invest 14 million euros for each of the seasons. This would mean 20,000 euros per day less than what the current TVE series costs, according to AlgoPasaTV.

Faced with this investment, David Broncano has the difficult task of not only maintaining La 1’s current audience, but also trying to surpass it. The data for 2023-2024, according to sources consulted by La Vanguardia to Atresmedia, show that public television has achieved an average of 9.1% share and 1,224,000 viewers during said period.

This puts it in second place compared to Antena 3, which with El Hormiguero has achieved an average of 15.8% and 2,128,000 viewers, which is double. With this, La 1 has lost 6.7 points compared to the previous year. Something they want to try to recover and Broncano will try to achieve whatever it takes if he doesn’t want to be fired.

To do this, they could try to get part of Telecinco’s audience, which is in third place with a 7.6% share and 1,018,000 viewers on average. Even so, if one thing is clear, it is that its main competitor will be Pablo Motos, since they have very similar program styles. Both are in charge of interviewing celebrities who are going to promote their upcoming works.

It is not surprising that this signing is generating concern in the Antena 3 program team. So much so, that Motos spoke out in his space. “RTVE workers must be seeing how they are ridiculing the prestige of an extraordinary network with extraordinary professionals and great balance,” he stated. “I feel very uncomfortable talking about this topic and I’m going to change,” he added.
