Prime Video started almost as an author platform, but the Amazon company has been obsessed with having unquestionable commercial successes for some time. Following this line, they have turned The Boys series into a franchise after confirming, during the broadcast of the second season, that it was a phenomenon. And what does this imply? They have already given birth to the spin-off that absolutely no one expected: The Boys: México with Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal as executive producers.

At the moment, the project is in the development phase, according to Deadline. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, a screenwriter on the rise after signing the film with a Latin superhero Blue Beetle, works as a creator although, along with Luna and García Bernal, he is looking for another screenwriter who can share the duties of showrunner with him. The details of the plot are unknown apart from the fact that it will be filmed in Mexico and, therefore, will show the functioning of a society different from that of the United States.

Luna and García Bernal, who already starred in 2001 in Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu madre also with Maribel Verdú, will also participate as actors, although in secondary or recurring roles. Both are a good tool to internationalize The Boys: Mexico as they are two of the best-known Mexican stars globally.

Luna has worked on films such as My Name is Harvey Milk, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Star Wars: Rogue One and is currently leading the series Andor set in the Star Wars universe, while García Bernal, who became known in the global with Amores Perros by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, he has been in The Motorcycle Diaries, Bad Education, The Science of Sleep and has a run on Amazon after having headed Mozart in the Jungle.

With The Boys: Mexico, the fourth production derived from the comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson is confirmed, which could almost be described as anti-superheroic. Imagine a United States where there is no shortage of citizens with superhuman abilities who, in the best of cases, become superheroes for Vought International, a company that controls the market by privatizing the country’s security, which produces adaptations of its payroll superheroes in Hollywood, which dominates merchandising and even has universities to train these people with skills. It is, in short, the perversion of the superhero genre after turning it into a criticism of capitalism.

The Boys, creatively led by Erik Kripke, premiered in 2019 and is in the production phase of its fourth season, after having even been nominated for an Emmy for best drama series with the second. In 2022, The Boys presents: Diabolical was released, an anthology animated series that told stories set in this universe.

This same year Prime Video launched Gen V, a more adolescent spin-off following young people enrolled at Godolkin, a Vought International university, and it is already renewed for a second season. While waiting for this The Boys: Mexico, we will have to see if Amazon decides to squeeze even more the goose that lays the golden eggs.
