The secret of Kandy, the 88-year-old backpacker grandmother to travel the world: "I have been to more than 67 countries"

Kandy García, or better known as the ‘backpacker granny’, has become one of the most popular faces on social networks. Since she was very little she always had a dream: to go around the world. Therefore, after turning 65 and spending a lifetime practicing law, Kandy decided to leave her monotonous life behind and embark on the journey of a lifetime.

Now at 88 years old, he continues to demonstrate that age is not an impediment to fulfilling dreams, which is why he continues traveling day after day with a backpack on his back and seeing some of the most impressive wonders in the world. An experience that she wanted to share on her social networks and that has already taken her to travel a total of 67 countries.

But before heading to her next stop, the content creator wanted to visit the set of And Now Sonsoles to explain to Sonsoles Ónega what the secret is to traveling around the world. With a big smile and with her inseparable backpack, Kandy entered the set of the Antena 3 program and was received with a standing ovation from the audience.

”You’re not 88 years old,” the presenter jokingly told him. As soon as the interview began, the guest explained that one of the essential things to travel the world was the backpack, but not just any one. ”A backpack should never exceed 10% of your weight. I weighed 50kg and was carrying a 4 or 5kg backpack. When I see backpackers carrying twice your weight… it’s impossible,’ she said.

For 9 months he traveled around the world and the only thing he needed in his backpack was a notebook and a pen. ”I also carried a piece of soap, which I used to wash my hair, body, face and clothes. For everything,’ she confessed.

As soon as he retired, he took his first trip around the world for seven months. After his exceptional adventure, Kandy decided to continue traveling until she was 80 years old. ”My son told me he is dangerous, it is better that friends accompany you. And now I go with groups of friends, I no longer travel alone. I just arrived from Sri Lanka and tomorrow I’m going to Colombia. Every month I go to a country, but now I am always accompanied,’ she declared. Regarding her favorite destination, Kandy said: “There are countries that catch me, but there are others that I get stuck in, but India for me has been a before and after.”
