Life gives us life. Death kills us. And I’m not talking about life itself or death itself, but that of beings so important that their presence or absence is capable of determining ours. Ana Obregón knows this very well. In the interview that she publishes today in the magazine Hello! she explains to us that she died on May 13, 2020 and was born again on March 20, 2023. “I have returned, I have risenâ€, she affirms while she calls for empathy towards her situation. This situation a priori as difficult to manage as it is to be a mother and a grandmother at the same time. Or rather, grandmother and mother. Because she says it very clearly. The girl, Ana Sandra Lequio Obregón, is the daughter of the deceased and her beloved son. “This was Aless’s last will: to bring his son into the world. And so she told her father and me orally a week before she died, â€she recounts in the emotional interview.
After Aless’s death, the actress was clear about her mission, which, according to her account, kept her alive: to fulfill her son’s three last wishes. And she has every right in the world to do so. Basically, because none of the three harms anyone, on the contrary, and the most controversial has legal support in the country where it was carried out. And who could deny the last wishes of a dying son if they are viable?
Obregón first created the foundation that bears the name of Aless Lequio and whose objective is to raise funds for cancer research. He also finished the book that his son was writing and that he will present in a few weeks. And the same day that she died, she made the decision to embark on the path of surrogacy that has taken her to Miami, where she remains with the baby, stunned by the debate that her case has sparked in Spain. Because of her age and for opting for this assisted reproduction technique.
Respect for age, now that things have been clarified, no one can doubt that Ana Obregón has the appropriate years to be a grandmother, which is the relationship with which she most identifies in the interview. Her case is not unique in the United States. And what’s more, North American legislation contemplates that a woman can be a biological grandmother and mother by surrogacy; as well as the posthumous reproduction requested by the parents of the deceased, even without their prior consent. Some much more extreme cases have reached the courts and have established jurisprudence. For example, several parents have obtained a court order to extract sperm from their dead son in order to have a biological grandchild.
In Spain, it is only contemplated if requested by the deceased’s partner to proceed with their own fertilization, to which they must submit within a maximum period of twelve months. This norm, however, will not be an inconvenience for the situation of Ana Obregón’s biological granddaughter, her adoptive daughter, to be legal in Spain. Neither this, nor the subject of surrogacy that has given so much to talk about despite the fact that it has been practiced for years. You only need to register the girl at the consulate so that she can travel to Spain with all the legal guarantees.
The other question is to what extent is it lawful for parents to decide to engender a new life with the sperm of a dead child, of an always absent parent and of a donor biological mother and, therefore, anonymous. And to finish squaring the circle, gestated through a rented womb. A few decades ago it would have sounded like science fiction. But science advances that it is outrageous. And Ana Obregón has worked a miracle, that her son has that desired offspring, despite the fact that she is not there to see it or enjoy it. But as her mother says, the little girl “is the most desired girl in the world, because she has been desired from earth and from heaven.”
There is no doubt that no one should take the right to judge Ana Obregón, not even parents who have lost a child, despite the fact that it is the only opinion that she intends to accept, as explained by the actress in the interview. . After all, each one goes through their own hell and she is the only one who knows the horrors of hers. It is shocking to read when she says about her son: “If I swore that I was going to save him and I couldn’t save him, how can I not do what he wanted me to do?” And carrying out Aless’s last wish, not only one Ana was born, but two.
