The medical series 'New Amsterdam' could have a sequel… futuristic

There is a channel in the United States that regrets having ended one of its recent hits prematurely. NBC canceled New Amsterdam after five seasons and aired the final episodes in January 2023. Just a year later, it already has a possible spin-off in the works: a futuristic sequel focused on Luna Goodwin, the protagonist’s daughter.

Let us remember that, when the medical drama said goodbye, it did so by introducing a new medical director at New Amsterdam. She was played by Molly Griggs. Her introductory speech to the hospital workers was reminiscent of the one Max Goodwin made in the pilot. And, before saying goodbye to the series, it was revealed that that woman was Luna Goodwin when she was older, who had followed in her father’s footsteps and also her attitude towards medicine.

David Schulner, the creator of the original series, is behind the development of the continuing sequel: Peter Horton, who was involved in New Amsterdam since the first season as director and executive producer, would also shoot the pilot if the project receives the green light .

The idea is that, by setting three decades in the future, the sequel imagines how medicine may have advanced thanks to artificial intelligence and new technologies. Of course, one should not lose sight of the important political and social discourse of New Amsterdam, which served to defend free healthcare in a country like the United States where healthcare is privatized.

As Deadline reports, behind this interest in resurrecting the New Amsterdam brand could be the late success of the series on Netflix in the United States: like Suits, it became a regular marathon for the platform’s numerous subscribers. The NBC channel is confident that, if it produces a sequel, it could attract this audience to free-to-air television or, at least, attract viewers to its own content platform, Peacock.
