Talking about Sinéad O’Connor is talking about a hard and dramatic life. The Irish singer has died this Wednesday at the age of 56, as reported by the Irish Times.
The news of his death comes 18 months after his 17-year-old son died, after being missing for a week after he escaped from the suicide prevention and rehabilitation center where he was staying.
Sinéad herself was in charge of announcing the tragic loss through social networks: “She has decided to end her earthly struggle,” she wrote, confirming a suicide. In addition, weeks later, the singer charged the institution in which she was he found, for not having known how to prevent him from leaving.
Now, Sinéad O’Connor’s problems with mental health began much earlier. The artist suffered abuse from a very young age, which led to serious mental problems. The Irish woman was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and attempted suicide on several occasions.
As she herself explained in her autobiography, the demands of the music industry were also key to complicating her state of health. O’Connor considered that the record companies had wanted to label her as a “crazy” during her most successful time in order to market a countercultural and transgressive image. According to her own testimony, this ended up crushing her and caused her to move away from show business.
In this sense, in 2015 he unilaterally canceled a tour that he had already planned precisely due to mental problems and weeks later he suffered a significant overdose. This led her to cut off all contact she had with her family.
Two years later, O’Connor was again in the eye of the hurricane after posting a video in which she appeared totally devastated and in tears in a motel. “Mental illness is like drugs, no matter who you are. What is worse is the stigma, no matter who you are, ”she repeated in the publication.
This was a turning point in his life. From there, the Irish woman’s health improved until in 2020 she announced a new world tour. However, the death of her partner was a blow to her again and she ended up canceling it.
After this blow, O’Connor relapsed into his drug problems, until he entered a detoxification center.
Despite this torturous life, the acclaimed Dublin performer went on to release ten studio albums, while her song ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ was named the number one single in the world in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.
