“It’s a story that if they made it into a fictional film we would say that the film is worthless because the story is impossible,” says Mònica Planas in the Versió RAC1 program by Toni Clapés about the Netflix documentary Dime quién soy.
It is the story of two identical twin brothers, Alex and Marcus Lewis. They were born in 1964 and lived with their parents, English aristocrats, in a large, old house on the outskirts of London: “Two inseparable brothers, who do everything together, but from a key fact, this trust will be broken traumatic,” explains Planas.
The story begins in 1982 when Alex has a very serious motorcycle accident, at the age of 18, and loses his memory. He has forgotten everything, including people. “He only recognizes his brother Marcus. Beyond that, his mind has gone blank,” he says.
“Coming home was traumatic,” says Planas, “he didn’t remember his house, or his parents. The only thing that comforts him when he leaves the hospital and goes with them is the trust he places in his brother.”
Alex explains how his brother Marcus builds memories based on photographs. While the father of the twins “is such a strange man that even his brother gives him instructions on how he should treat him.” Furthermore, there were very strange rules in the house, they were not allowed to go upstairs, they did not eat with them, they did not have keys and they lived in the garden shed.
When their father died, the brothers believed that the situation at home would become normal and that they would be able to return home and lead a normal life. However, that doesn’t happen. “The mother continues to keep them away in the garden shed and the rules are even stricter.” And five years later the mother died.
When both parents die, you can finally access their house. In each room they enter they find some surprise, such as gifts that relatives had sent them for Christmas and that their parents had never given them.
Finally, they reach the mother’s room and find a strange thing, a closet within a locked closet. “Inside they find something that will cause conflict between the brothers for the next 25 years.”
