Switzerland breaks the glass microphone to win Eurovision

After months of preparation, tension and many controversies, the Eurovision 2024 contest has come to an end after completing three tough days of competition at the Malmö Arena in Sweden. After a tense round of jury and televoting, Switzerland emerged victorious through Nemo and his song The Code. A fact that has given him a glass microphone that, surprisingly, has lasted very few seconds on stage.

Once he finished his second performance of the song that gave him the victory, Nemo found the trophy broken in the middle of the stage when he put it back in its place. As can be seen in the images registered by the EBU and shared by many users on X (Twitter), the artist in charge of representing the transalpine country has kept half of the prize in his hand and the base on the ground.

Social networks have quickly reacted to this comical moment after a complicated week in northern Europe. “The noise of the glass cracking as it breaks as if I were throwing a f*cking lightbulb into the glass container has me in tears,” said one user. “Hahaha I loved that moment because the blow rang, who would think of making a glass trophy so that in addition to showing with it in their hand?” commented another message.

There were also those who saw this moment as a sign: “It may be a metaphor and after all Eurovision 2024 is the last edition. Look, with Chiqui Chiqui they tried to burst it and there was no way, but what happened today should have completely sunk it.” “It is quite a symbol that the Eurovision trophy has been broken at the end of the contest,” read another response at a moment that culminated a tachycardia televoting session.

One of the critical moments of the evening came during the scoring of the Netherlands, which had been expelled from the final after its representative, Joost Klein, allegedly attacked an organization worker. The mention of Holland raised the spirit of the Malmö Arena, which immediately booed the festival manager Martin Österdahl, who ended up giving the delegation’s twelve points.

The countries that have scored Eden Golan have been Malta with three, Norway, Cyprus and Germany with eight, 3 more from Georgia and Moldova, five from Estonia and Belgium, another three from France, two from Latvia and four from Lithuania, leaving the country with a total of 52 points on the way to televoting, in twelfth position. Finally, the public from all over the world has ended up contributing a total of 323 points, 12 of them from Spain, amid loud complaints that have turned into applause when Ukraine has taken away the lead.
