Dramatic video footage captured the moment when a Coast Guard helicopter team rescued two boaters who were lost 73 miles offshore during Hurricane Debby. The 34-foot boat had lost its sail near Boca Grande on Sunday, as reported by the U.S. Coast Guard in a press release. The rescue operation began after 5 p.m. the day before when the friends of the two men called the St. Petersburg Coast Guard station to report that they had missed their scheduled check-in on their journey from Key West to Tarpon Springs. The two boaters were spotted wearing life jackets and holding onto railings as their boat was battered by 15- to 20-foot waves.
Despite challenging weather conditions with low visibility, high seas, and strong winds, an Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane rescue crew managed to locate the stranded boaters around 11 a.m. the following day. An Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew then lifted the boaters and transported them to Air Station Clearwater.
Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Hooper, a search and rescue mission coordinator at Coast Guard District Seven, emphasized the importance of accurate information and safety equipment in such cases. He mentioned that receiving an updated satellite position from the boaters’ friend played a crucial role in successfully locating them. The rescue operation was a joint effort between District Seven and Sector St. Petersburg while Tropical Storm Debby was affecting the region.
Hurricane Debby, which was later downgraded to a tropical storm, had initially made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend area early Monday morning as a Category 1 hurricane. Tragically, at least five people in Florida and Georgia lost their lives due to the storm, according to Fox Weather reports.
