The actress Ana de Armas has become a national pride for thousands of Spaniards eager to see a native artist succeed at the Oscars. It is not the first time that we have experienced something like this, Juan Antonio Bardem started this path that few others like Almodóvar, Buñuel, Penélope Cruz or Javier Bardem have followed, with more or less success.
Ana de Armas was nominated for the ‘Best Actress’ category for giving life to the iconic Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s film, Blonde. The statuette finally went to the hands of the great favourite, Michelle Yeoh, star of Everything at the same time everywhere, who won the title of being the first woman of Asian origin to achieve this award.
Despite not expecting to win the award, the artist paraded very happy and excited on the red carpet of the gala with a beautiful and elegant Louis Vuitton dress in homage to Norma Jean.
During the carpet, the actress answered different questions and spoke for many media outlets. Among them, de Armas spoke to Movistar Plus about the irony that Marilyn had never been nominated for these awards: ”It’s a pity that Marilyn never received recognition. But I am very proud, being able to interpret her life from a more intimate and more human point of view,” she acknowledged.
Although these words were received with a lot of support on social networks due to the more than obvious respect that Ana has for a figure like Marilyn, there were also a lot of comments about the level of Spanish of the Spanish-Cuban actress and her American accent.
”When did you forget to speak Spanish?”, ”Why does Ana de Armas have a Texan accent? She in Spain she spoke Spanish perfectly ” or ” Why does she have that accent? She did arrive a few months ago without speaking English and now she can’t speak Spanish?”, Among others.
The controversy that the new Yankee accent of actress Ana de Armas has raised has somewhat tarnished the merit that a Spanish-Cuban actress is nominated in the category of ‘Best Actress’ at the Oscars.
Despite not having won, this nomination places the young woman we all knew as Carolina in El Internado as one of the most important actresses in the world film industry, quite a milestone.
